IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THIS PIECE, I HIGHLY RECCOMMEND THAT YOU LOOK THIS ARTIST UP. HE WAS AN AMAZING MAN. JOHN L. CLARKE WAS BORN IN 1881. HIS MOTHER WAS A FULL BLOOD PIEGAN INDIAN, NAMED MARGRET FIRST KILL. MARGRET WAS THE DAUGHTER OF A CHIEF NAMED EITHER UNDER BULL OR BIG SNAKE. HIS FATHER WAS HORACE CLARKE. AT THE AGE OF TWO, JOHN CONTRACTED SCARLET FEVER WHICH LEFT HIM DEAF. HE NEVER LEARNED TO SPEAK. THE FAMILY WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN AIDING THE BLACKFEET ACQUIRE THE AREA THAT IS NOW GLACIER NATIONAL PARK AS WELL AS MANY OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS FOR THE BLACKFEET TRIBE.
JOHN L. CLARK WENT ON TO WIN A GOLD MEDAL IN 1918 BY THE AMERICAN ART GALLERIES OF PHILIDELPHIA. IN 1928, HE WON THE SILVER MEDAL FROM THE SPOKANE ART ASSOCIATION. HIS PIECES WERE OWNED BY PRESIDENT WARREN G. HARDING, JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER JR., AND JOHNS-MANSVILLE, TO NAME A FEW. HE WAS RECOGNIZED AND HONORED BY THE DEAF COMMUNITY. IN 1995, HE WAS INDUCTED INTO THE MONTANA HALL OF FAME.
NOW THAT YOU’VE HAD YOUR HISTORY LESSON, ALLOW ME TO TELL YOU ABOUT THIS MAGNIFICENT PIECE. IT IS TITLED “PROUD BIGHORN” AND IT IS SIGNED BY JOHN L. CLARK (PICTURED). IT IS IN ABSOLUTELY MINT CONDITION AND WEIGHS IN AT 38.2 POUNDS. IT MEASURES APPROXIMATELY 19 1/2″ INCHES TALL AND 14 1/2″ WIDE. IF YOU LOOK AT THE PICTURES, YOU CAN SEE A CRACK IN THE FRONT. THAT CRACK IS PART OF THE PIECE. IT IS NOT DAMAGED IN ANY WAY. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YEAR THIS PIECE WAS MADE. THIS IS A PIECE OF HISTORY, FOLKS. AND IT IS TRULY AN AMAZING PIECE.
